What is Oasis Project Misaal? {‘Misaal’ (मिसाल) is a Hindi language word meaning Precedent, First as an example to guide rest.}
Project Misaalaims to spot, inspire, prepare, guide and support teenagers, youths, teachers, citizens who wish to bring about a positive cultural change in the society and country at large by being Change themselves first, i.e. they be Role-model of that change and lead others.
Why: India is the largest democracy in the world with a population of 132+ crores. India has more than 50% population below the age of 25 yrs and more than 65% below the age of 35 years. India produces the best doctors, engineers and scientists and has excellent economic growth. At the same time it is also true that India is suffering from large issues like corruption, unemployment, pollution, poverty etc. Take corruption, for example. Is it possible to have these problems unless educated people are not party to this? Isn’t that people who are at the helm of affairs, who have power and position, are the ones who actively instigate and participate in this problem? So there has to be something seriously wrong in our education system wherein we can produce experts in various fields but not good hearts to deal with problems of life, society and country at large.
After rich experience of 27 years of working with youths and children we have learnt that if given an opportunity and guided well children and youth have the potential to resolve not only their own problems but they also have the heart and mind both to contribute towards the society. All they need is an opportunity. Inculcating right values in the next generations is the only way out.
Who can participate?
1. Teenagers from the age of 14 yrs onward, 2. College youths, 3. Teachers, 4. Citizens
How: Through Misaal Project, Oasis looks forward to identify those leaders who believe that they are born to do something great, they have courage & sensitivity; who are beaming with confidence and ready to do something for society at large and for education system in particular. This is done through various systematic processes like Expressing self in Essays, Group learning, Practical field work and so on.
From winners to runner-ups till All who participated in Misaal Project will get various gifts from Oasis, which can be in the form of participation in Oasis Greatness Course, Special Trekking Camps, Leadership Camps or Gift Booklets on self-development, depending upon which stage they have cleared.

Highlights of Execution of Pilot Project
Essay Stage:
I evaluated the essays because I love to do it. One particular essay wherein the child hadn’t written what we should do but he had written I WILL DO... which means that the child had written the essay with a lot of responsibility. Personally I felt deep joy upon reading that essay.

Before Misaal project, I was lazy and was not so serious about studies & my life. Misaal gave me direction. When I wrote essay on ‘Gender Discrimination” I read many things related to that and I was really disappointed with the fact that women are not given importance & respect they deserve. During the Group Dialogue one girl talked about problems of poor people and children. Her words penetrated my heart like bullets and my eyes were full of tears. With all limitations these people were happy and with all facilities, we are not, and want more and more. I resolved to do something for them. Thanks to Oasis.

Group Dialogue Stage:
I always believed that children will do only what they are told to do. But during Group Dialogue when children were presenting their views/ opinions on problems of India I realized that if we trust them and set them free they do understand their responsibilities. They need guidance and asking right questions is enough. I could sense the genuine concern for the nation in each child. I saw that children blossomed like a beautiful flower after the Group Dialogue. 2-3 hours can make such a huge impact!!

Being a teacher & principal I have dealt with many kids throughout my life. Like most of us I had also lost hope from today’s generation. I went as a judge for the Group Dialogue with the same mind set. For the 1st round I thought children can do this as they prepare for exams.
But in the second round of Group Dialogue when children added new points to their presentation I was shocked! Their thoughts, ideas were novel, creative and had depth. We had goosebumps. It was in this round that my faith and trust in new generation was restored.

Being the judge for essay helped me understand the spirit of Misaal and Judging GD was quite easy and helpful. Overall it was excellent. I was pleased to see how the very reticent participants opened-up and were filled with enthusiasm by the end of the GD. It was inspiring.

ગ્રૂપ ડાયલોગમાં જે તે વિષય પર પોતાના વિચારો રજૂ કરવાની સાથે અન્ય બાળકોને સાંભળીને ફરી પોતાના વિચારો રજૂ કરવાની વાત ખૂબ ગમી. સાંભળવાની પ્રક્રિયા ખૂબ જરૂરી છે એ વાત પર લેવલ-૨માં ખાસ ભાર મૂકવામાં આવ્યો તે વાત તદ્દન નવી અને અત્યંત જરૂરી લાગી અને practically બાળકોએ એને apply કર્યું ત્યારે, તેની જે અસરકારકતા દેખાઈ તે ખરેખર હૃદયસ્પર્શી અને આનંદદાયક હતી.

Practical Field Work Stage:
This project has given me WILL to fight against my circumstances. I was not ready to participate in it just because of my Exams. But as I got deeply into it and when I listened to Coordinators, it gave me strength and power to face my problems. The third stage- Field Work – was my favorite. When I went out and talked with people, tried to understand their view-points, I learnt a lot. The thing which touched the most during the Field Work was to listen ‘No’ from people and without getting disheartened going again to another person. Yes, I could change my ‘Negatives’ into ‘Positives’. I have become Misaal (Example-Role Model) for me.

‘પ્રોજેક્ટ ડે’ના દિવસે સવારે ઋત્વી ભટ્ટ(૮મા ધોરણની વિદ્યાર્થીની)ને ફોન કર્યો. એના પપ્પાએ જણાવ્યું કે ઋત્વી એમ કહે છે કે, ”આવું તો મે ક્યારેય કર્યું જ નથી અને હું નહીં કરી શકું. હું ફેલ થઈશ. મને ડર લાગે છે એટલે હું નહીં કરી શકું.” મેં શાંતિથી ઋત્વી સાથે વાત કરી અને એ તૈયાર થઈ. એનું પસંદ કરેલું કામ હતું – ગરીબ બાળકોનાં માતાપિતાને તેમના બાળકોને સ્કૂલમાં ભણાવવા માટે સમજાવવા. એણે ફૂટપાથ પર ધંધો કરતા, વડાપાઉંની લારીવાળા અને લારી પર આવતા લોકો, શેરીઓમાં શાક વેચતા લારીવાળા... ઘણા લોકો સાથે વાત કરી. પછી મને મળી ત્યારે આનંદિત હતી અને આત્મવિશ્વાસથી છલકાતી હતી. મેં કહ્યું, “તેં ખૂબ સરસ અને સુંદર કામ કર્યું છે.”

Essay અને Group Dialogueમાં મારો આત્મવિશ્વાસ વધ્યો. પણ સૌથી વધુ મજા Field Workમાં આવી. મારો વિષય હતો – “સ્ત્રી-પુરુષ વચ્ચેનો ભેદભાવ એક ગુનો છે.” સૌ પ્રથમ હું મારા શિક્ષકો પાસે ગઈ. એક શિક્ષકનો પ્રતિભાવ યોગ્ય ના લાગ્યો. સાંભળીને સમજાવવાની કોશિશ કરી. પરંતુ એમને ખૂબ બધી સમસ્યાઓ અને શંકાઓ હતી. એ દિવસે મારું મનાંકન તૂટ્યું કે બધા જ શિક્ષિત લોકો આ વિષયે સભાનતા ધરાવે છે. પછી હું એક ફૂટવેરની દુકાનના માલિકને મળી. એમણે સુંદર વાત કરી. એમને ૩ દીકરીઓ જ છે. ત્રણેય દીકરીઓઓ પર એમને ખૂબ ગર્વ છે. સમાજ વિરુદ્ધ જઈને તેમણે તેમની દીકરીઓને ભણાવી-ગણાવીને ખૂબ આગળ વધારી છે. આજે એમની દીકરીઓ સારી નોકરી કરીને કમાઈ રહી છે. આ આખા પ્રસંગે મારાં જૂનાં મનાંકનો બદલ્યા. સમાજના કહેવાતા શિક્ષિત લોકો અને આવા દુકાનવાળા ભાઈ જેવા વૈચારિક સમૃદ્ધ લોકો વચ્ચેનો ભેદ પરખાયો.
આ પ્રોજેક્ટ દ્વારા હું મારો આત્મવિશ્વાસ, ચારિત્ર્ય ઘડતર, મારો રસ્તો, મારું સ્વપ્ન, મારું મિશન – બધું જ મેળવી શકી. અને સૌથી અગત્યનું, મિસાલે મને ઓએસિસ આપ્યું.

Experiences & Reflections:
It was indeed a great learning experience. The one thing that touched profoundly was remarkable transformation of one Principal ma’m of the school with which I had coordinated. Initially she was not interested or eager to listen and help. But, as the project went ahead, she witnessed the performances of their school students and she got interested seeing school's growth. At the end, she showed her generous support and helped as much she can. She also provided scope for further expansion of different self-developmental activities in their school!! So it was a great deal!!

મિસાલ પ્રોજેક્ટ મારા માટે અંત સુધી કસોટીજનક રહ્યો. યુવા-સ્વયંસેવકો સાથે મળી Project Executionની જવાબદારી અમે લીધી હતી. દર ૩-૪ દિવસે રાત્રે ૮ વાગ્યે કોઓર્ડીનેટર્સ સાથે મીટિંગ હોય અને છૂટા પડતા ૧૦ વાગે. સ્કૂલ, ટ્યૂશન, પ્રોજેક્ટનું કામ અને મીટિંગ - સવારે દસ વાગ્યે ઘરની બહાર નીકળ્યો હોઉં તો રાત્રે ૧૦ વાગ્યે ઘરે પહોંચું. અને પછી ભણવાનું-વાંચવાનું. ઘણીવાર તો રાતના ૧-૨ વાગી જતા. ઘરમાં બધા ગુસ્સો કરતા. રક્ષાબંધનના આગળના દિવસે મારી બહેન રાખડી બાંધવા આવી ત્યારે હું મીટિંગમાં હતો. ના પાડવું મારા માટે અઘરું હતું. પરંતુ હું ન ગયો. ઘરે ઝગડો થયો. પણ મેં સહન કરી લીધું. પ્રોજેક્ટ વિનર્સ જ્યારે એવું બોલ્યા કે, “વિનીત, અત્યાર સુધી Dream જોયું અને કંઈ કર્યું નહીં. આ વખતે Dream પર કામ કર્યું અને ખૂબ મજા આવી. હવે, આ રીતે જ કામ કરીશું,” ત્યારે મને ખૂબ આનંદ થયો.

મિસાલ પ્રોજેક્ટમાં ભાગ લેનાર બાળકોમાં દેશ, સમાજ કે કુટુંબમાં પરિવર્તન લાવવાનો જુવાળ જોવા મળ્યો. પ્રોજેક્ટ દરમિયાન સુંદર, ઉત્સાહથી કંઈક કરવાની ભાવનાનો તરવરાટ અનુભવતી એક છોકરી મારા સંપર્કમાં આવી. વાતચીતમાં એણે કહ્યું કે પહેલાં એની માતા દ્વારા એની ઉપર ખૂબ શિસ્ત લાદવામાં આવી હતી – ક્યાંય જવાની છૂટ નહીં અને એકલી તો ક્યારેય નહીં; દીકરી પર જાણે વિશ્વાસ જ નહીં. માતાએ મિસાલની વાત સંભાળી. અને પ્રથમ ચરણમાં પસંદગી પામતા જ માતામાં બદલાવ આવ્યો. બીજા ચરણમાં જવાની અનુમતિ મળી અને પછી ત્રીજા ચરણમાં તો વિશ્વાસ બંધાઈ ગયો. માતાના વર્તનમાં ખૂબ પરિવર્તન આવ્યું. અને, દીકરીના મનમાં માતા માટેનો પ્રેમ ખૂબ વધ્યો.

Very good initiative (taken by Oasis) to bring out leadership qualities in youth. I would look forward and sure of Missal will bring real leaders who are passionate towards social causes. This was seen in the children. Most liked part was the way children are thinking about the social causes and finding solutions. And great topics chosen for essay and project.

૧૦મા ધોરણનું મને ટૅન્શન હતું. મિસાલ પ્રોજેક્ટે મને એવી ખેંચી કે ટૅન્શન દૂર થઈ ગયું. હું દર વખતે ડરી જતી કે મારાથી આ ન થાય કારણ કે હું નાની છું. પરંતુ મિસાલમાં કામ કર્યા બાદ જે આત્મવિશ્વાસ આવ્યો એ અજબ જ હતો. મેં 20 બાળકોનું રજિસ્ટ્રેશન કર્યું અને ફાયદો અદ્ભુત હતો. જૂના શિક્ષકો સાથે સંબંધ વિકસ્યો, નવા મિત્રો બનાવતા શીખી. સમયની કિંમત સમજાઈ. રિસેસમાં કે સાઇકલ પર જતાં હું મિત્રોને સમજાવતી. હું સાચી રીતે busy રહેતાં શીખી. હું ટ્યૂશન છોડીને હું મિસાલમાં કામ કરવા આવતી અને મને આનંદ થતો કે ખરેખર આજે કંઈક કર્યું છે. બાળકો અંગે જે સામાન્ય છાપ છે કે તેઓ આળસુ હોય છે, તેવું તો ક્યાંય ના દેખાયું. ખૂબ ઉત્સાહથી બધાં કામ કરી રહ્યાં હતાં. આટલી મહેનત અને પ્રામાણિકતા બીજે ક્યાંય ન દેખાય.
