Educating Mind Without Educating Heart
is No Education At All
Put yourself into the shoes of a child who’s about to mark his/her first steps into a school. Look through those sparkly eyes brimming with questions and joy. Let your heart feel the smiles of sheer happiness, innocence and peace. Let yourself pay attention to how unique the child is, and the infinite potentials that he/she carries.
 
And now, put yourself into the shoes of a graduate who has just passed out of a college/university. Go through the stress he/she has about finding a job so that he/she can get returns on the investment made by his/her parents. Let your eyes look at the brain filled with theories and concepts, and then look at the insecure heart that is searching for the clouds of happiness and peace within a dark room.
 
What happened in between is cruelty – “education”as some like to call it.
 સૌ શિક્ષિતો, કરો સવાલ! 
  • શું શાળા ને કૉલેજમાં જવાથી, ડિગ્રી અને સર્ટિફિકેટ હાંસલ કરવાથી જ ભણી શકાય તેવું શિક્ષણ માને છે? કે પછી જીવનમાં સતત શીખતાં કેવી રીતે રહેવું, તે શીખવવાનો શિક્ષણનો હેતુ છે?      
  • જો વિદ્યાર્થી પરીક્ષામાં સુંદર દેખાવ કરે, તો શાળા જોરશોરથી પોતાનું ગૌરવ જાહેર કરે છે. તો વિદ્યાર્થીનું પરિણામ નબળું હોય ત્યારે પણ તેની જવાબદારી શાળાની ન કહેવાય?
  • શિક્ષણનો ઇરાદો શું છે - શાળા બાળક માટે છે કે બાળક શાળા માટે છે? બાળકે ગમેતેમ કરીને શાળાને બંધબેસતા થવાનું છે, કે શાળાએ બાળકના વિકાસને અનુરૂપ બનવાનું છે?
  • દરેક વિદ્યાર્થીની અનન્યતા - તેની અભિરુચિ, તેની પ્રતિભાઓ, તેનાં સ્વપ્નો, તેના સાહજિક ગુણો, તેની આવડતો વગેરેને તે પોતે ઓળખી શકે અને ખીલવી શકે તે માટે શિક્ષણ કોઈ મહત્ત્વની ભૂમિકા અદા કરે છે?
  • એકઝામમાં ફેલ એટલે જીવનમાં પણ ફેલ - શું આવું શિક્ષણ સાબિત કરવા માંગે છે? ઓછા ભણેલા કે અભણ લોકો જીવનમાં સફળ નથી હોતા? પરીક્ષામાં નબળા ને નિષ્ફળ શું સુંદર જીવન નથી જીવતા?

Are you happy with our education system?
 
Most probably, you’re not and so aren’t most people. What do we do about it? Well, some of us blame the government, teachers, schools, parents and the entire system; some of us keep on arguing about the problems in our education system; and some of us turn a blind eye as if everything’s fine.

But is there any point in all of this? Does it lead us to anything remotely fruitful? We all know answers to these questions, don’t we?

At Oasis, we don’t want to breed this culture of complaining because we firmly believe that if we’re not providing any solution, we have absolutely no right to complain. That’s the reason why Oasis, through many initiatives and programs, has been rooting and working for Character Education.
 Education is DYING!
 A Campaign Where Citizens Take Actions to Redefine our Education System

launched the movement "Education is DYING!" in 2018]
When Hur Jinwala, student from Navsari (Gujarat) met Sanjiv Shah (Founder, Oasis Movement) after winning in Misaal Project, she shared the pain and concerns she had specifically for her classmates and in general for the students of our country. She had some very keen observations about the education system and she decided to write a letter to the Education Minister. Eventually she wrote the letter with her suggestions for improvement in the system. She also got the letter signed by the students and the teachers who agreed with her. In the 2018, Hur & Sanjivbhai launched the movement called 'Education is Dying'.

This movement involves writing letters to the Prime Minister and also and Chief Minister &  Education Minister of the state. But mind well, these are not just 'letters'. These letters encompass comprehensive solutions and approaches that could help bring tides of change in our system. These letters are written by the citizens of India – students, teachers, parents, educators, professionals, etc. Moreover, one must share the solutions with people and take at least 20 signatures from those who agree with the views/ideas presented in the letter.
Under the leadership of Vinit Jain, 70+ letters have been dispatched to the Government from 4 different cities in just 20 days! During this campaign, around 2000 people signed these letters and got their voices heard.
"પહેલાં તો હું એજ્યુકેશન સિસ્ટમથી ખૂબ જ ત્રાસી ગયો, સારા માર્ક્સ લાવીને પણ તે હજુ કામ નહતા લાગ્યા. જેવો આ પ્રોજેક્ટ જોયો, તરત જ મેં કહ્યું કે મારે આ  કરવો છે, ને મને તક પણ મળી. હું મારા રોજિંદા જીવનમાં દોસ્તો સાથે ઘણી વખત આ મુદ્દા પર ચર્ચા કરતો હોઉં, ને વાત એક ફરિયાદ બનીને રહી જતી. પરંતુ આ પ્રોજેક્ટ થકી સિસ્ટમમાં ક્યાં બદલાવ લાવવાની જરૂર છે તે અંગે ઘણા લોકો જોડે નવા નવા મુદ્દાઓ પર ચર્ચા થઈ. આ પ્રોજેક્ટથી ખ્યાલ આવ્યો કે માત્ર હું એકલો નથી જે આ સમસ્યાથી પીડાઈ રહ્યો છું, મારા જેવા કેટલાય મિત્રો, વડીલો, શિક્ષકોના મુદ્દા બહાર લાવી શક્યો, તેઓને વિચારતા કરી શક્યો તેનો મને ગર્વ છે."

Is this what those curious eyes deserve?
“My biggest concern with our system is that the ‘education’ that we’re given, has almost zero connection with the life. Let’s start with the 5-year-old children going to schools. Have you ever observed the sheer curiosity in their eyes when they observe sky, birds, flowers, etc? What do we do to those curious eyes? We give them a room and make them sit there for the whole day.”

એક વિદ્યાર્થી તરીકેની મારી આ મૂંઝવણોને હું કઈ રીતે ઉકેલું??
"મને બહુ પ્રશ્નો પૂછવાની આદત છે તે પ્રમાણે-જો મારા 90% નથી આવતા તો હું જીવનમાં નાપાસ છું? લાખ પ્રયત્ન પછી પણ પાઠ્યપુસ્તક ગોખી શકતી નથી તો શું હું ડફોળ છું? મારા પ્રશ્નો કે અભિપ્રાય રજૂ કરું તો શું હું વધારે પડતું બોલું છું? શાળામાં મારાથી પણ વધારે વજનદાર સ્કૂલબેગ લઈને જાઉં છું; તેમાંથી જો એકાદ પુસ્તક ભૂલી જાઉં તો શું હું શિક્ષણ મેળવા માટે અયોગ્ય છું?? શું શિક્ષણ પદ્ધતિ ખરેખર બાળકો સાથે આટલી બધી અન્યાયી છે?"

Do not make children's school-life painful
“I am a teacher and that's why I want to suggest that make each child feel special and feel that even he/she can make a lot of difference to the school and to the nation. Teacher should be trained with a mindset that all children are their responsibility. It’s their responsibility to motivate child to think and accept that learning is a wonderful experience and going to school can be a wonderful experience and not a painful stressful experience.”

મહેરબાની કરીને વિદ્યાર્થીઓની સર્જનાત્મકતાને મારી ન કાઢો
“દરેક વ્યક્તિ અજોડ છે. તો એક વિદ્યાર્થીના સારા ટકા જોઈને બીજો વિદ્યાર્થી કેમ લઘુતાગ્રંથિથી પીડાઈ રહ્યો છે? બાળકો દ્વારા રજૂ કરાતા વિચારો અને આવડતને નકારવા ન જોઈએ. શાળાએ વિદ્યાર્થીઓના વિચારોને પોષીને તેને સાચી દિશા આપવી જોઈએ. આમ કરવાથી કેટલાંય નવાં ક્ષેત્રો ખૂલશે, જે આપણી કલ્પનાની બહાર હશે. સાથે સૌના મનમાંથી ટકાનું મહત્ત્વ પણ ઘટશે.”

Why students knowledge is dependent only on textbooks?!
“I have yet to meet someone who is ‘interested’ in reading the textbook. I feel that the problem lies there itself. Students have nothing to do but to ‘read’ them. Pages and pages of what make very little sense to students like me. I believe that if more self-work was included, then they would be very well prepared for the world when it’s time. We would also have lesser students that just cram the works and vomit it all in the examination to get good marks.”

આધુનિક બન્યો જમાનો ને શિક્ષણનું થયું વ્યાપારિકરણ
“હાલ તો એવો સમય છે કે મા-બાપ મજૂરી કરીને પણ બાળકને ખાનગી શાળામાં જ ભણાવશે. શાળાનું નામ, તેનું ભૌતિક માળખું જોઈને વાલી ગર્વ કરશે કે 'મારું બાળક તો ફલાણી સ્કૂલમાં ભણે છે’, 'અમે તો આટલી મોંઘી ફી ભરીએ છીએ'... વગેરે દ્વારા દેખાદેખીની સ્પર્ધામાં સામેલ થઈ જાય છે. હાઈફાઈ શાળાઓ દ્વારા ઉઘરાવવામાં આવતી ઊંચી ફી ભરી બાળક્ને ભણાવાથી શિક્ષણનું સ્તર ઊંચે જતું નથી. પરંતુ, સારા ટકા લાવવાનું દબાણ જ વધે છે.”

Hey, At least give me space to make mistakes!!
“Let the students make mistakes, let them fall, let them learn, and let them fly. Guide them in correcting their mistakes, but do not punish them. Teach them the real values of life, give them all the practical aspects of knowledge, shower all your love on them, teach them how to value emotions, teach them how to stay confident, teach them HUMANITY.”

"We feel that Education is Really Dead!"

“હું મારી વાત કરું ને તો બાળપણથી જ શાળાની દરેક પરીક્ષાઓમાં ટોપરનું બિરુદ મેળવ્યું. પણ હાલ જ્યારે કૉલેજમાં ભણી રહી છું ત્યારે સમજાય છે કે માત્ર શૈક્ષણિક સિદ્ધિઓથી જીવનમાં સફળતા નથી મળતી. જ્યારે એવા લોકોને જોઉં છું, જે ભણતરથી  નહીં પણ પોતાની આવડતથી દુનિયાના અસલ ટોપર બને છે. ભણવા પાછળ પડેલા મારા જેવા વિદ્યાર્થીઓ છેલ્લે સામાન્ય વિદ્યાર્થીઓની હરોળમાં આવીને રહી જાય છે.”

“ધોરણ દસમાં ૯૦% આવ્યા એટલે મા-બાપ, શિક્ષકો, સમાજના કહેવા પ્રમાણે સાયન્સ લઈને એન્જિનીયર બનીને હાઈ-પ્રોફાઇલ કંપનીમાં ૩વર્ષ કામ કર્યું. પણ દુઃખી જ થઈ. ૩૪ વર્ષની ઉંમરે સમજાયું કે હું આર્ટ્સની વ્યક્તિ છું. જ્યારે લેખનને વ્યવસાય બનાવ્યો ત્યારે મને ખુશી મળવા લાગી અને આજે ૩૬ વર્ષની ઉંમરે ઈન્ટરનેટ પર બ્લોગ્સ લખું છું. આજે મારા રસનો વિષય તો મળી ગયો, પણ આ સિસ્ટમને કારણે મારા જીવનનાં  કિંમતી વર્ષો બગડ્યાં તેનો હિસાબ મારે કોની પાસે લેવાનો?”

“જો મારા માર્ક્સ મારા ભાઈ કરતાં ઓછા આવે તો મને ‘ડોબી’ તેમજ ‘ઠોઠ’નાં લેબલ આપવામાં આવે છે, મારા પર સારા ટકા લાવવા માટેનું દબાણ કરવામાં આવે છે પણ મારે તો રમતગમતમાં આગળ વધવું છે, તે તરફ કોઈનું ધ્યાન જ નથી.”

“‘કિલ્લોલ’ નામથી મેં પંદર વર્ષથી સુધી બાલવાડી ચલાવી છે. જેનો હેતુ બાળકો સાથે હસે-રમે અને નવું શીખે તેનો હતો. પણ સમયની સાથે મા-બાપની એ આશા કે ત્રણ વર્ષના બાળકને A, B, C ને ટ્વિન્કલ ટ્વિન્કલ ગોખાવી દઈએ જેથી ઈંગ્લીશ મિડિયમની શાળામાં મૂકવાની ઘેલછા પૂરી થાય. ધીરેધીરે બાળકોના આનંદ માટે ચાલુ થયેલી બાલવાડીની જગ્યા ફ્રેન્ચાઈઝી પ્લેસેંટર લઈ લીધું. આ કેવી કરૂણ પરિસ્થિતિ છે જ્યાં નાનું છોકરું હજુ બોલતાં શીખ્યું હોય ને તેને હરિફાઈની હોડમાં નાખી દઈ, બાળપણને જ છીનવી લેવામાં આવે છે.”

Misaal Honourship: Education of Life, Education for Life

Misaal Honourship Explorer is a program where true education of life is given in the hands of youngsters. They follow their heart and work with passion. They try to discover the potential they carry within by exploring different avenues. In the process, they learn to prepare for life by being financially and emotionally independent. They learn to face and digest failures, they learn how to celebrate success, they learn how to practice patience during tough phases, they learn to ask questions, they learn to make mistakes and they learn to live the life to its fullest.

જીવનને સાચી રીતે જીવતાં શીખવે તે જ સાચી શિક્ષણ પદ્ધતિ
 
"બીબાઢાળ શિક્ષણ વ્યવસ્થાની આજથી એક વર્ષ પહેલાં હું પણ શિકાર બની હતી. ૧૨ વિજ્ઞાનપ્રવાહની બોર્ડની પરીક્ષામાં હું ફેલ શું થઈ, આ (ફેલનો) ધબ્બો લાગતાની સાથે મારો આત્મવિશ્વાસ ડગી ગયો. હવે આગળ શું કરીશ તેનો ખ્યાલ પણ નહતો ત્યારે મિસાલ ઓનરશીપમાં જોડાવાનો મોકો મળ્યો. જેને કદાચ મારા ફેલ હોવાથી કોઈ ફરક નથી પડતો પણ એને મારી આ નિષ્ફળતાને પણ સફળતામાં બદલી શકાય છે તે તરફ મારું ધ્યાન ખેંચ્યું. આ વખતે ફરી મારા ગમતા વિષયો સાથે ૧૨મા ધોરણની પરીક્ષા આપવા હું તૈયાર થઈ. ફોર્મલ એજ્યુકેશનને વધુ મહત્ત્વ ન આપતાં ભણવાની સાથે બીજાં ઘણાં મારાં ગમતાં  કામો કર્યાં છે. શાળામાં માત્ર ૩૦% હાજરી હશે; ને મોટે ભાગે પરીક્ષા નજીક આવી ત્યારે જ વાંચ્યું હશે. પણ આ પરીક્ષા ખૂબ સારી રીતે આપી છે. એનું કારણ છે કે જે બાબતો હું શાળા કે વિષયો દ્વારા શીખી રહી હતી તેના કરતાં વધુ હું MHEમાં આવ્યા પછી શીખી અને પ્રેક્ટિકલી જીવી પણ રહી છું. તેથી હવે વિષયોને ગોખવાની જરૂર જ નથી પડતી. આપણી આ શિક્ષણ વ્યવસ્થા એવી હોવી જોઈએ જે વ્યક્તિના જીવનને પ્રાધાન્ય આપે. અને MHEની આ પ્રક્રિયા આ જ તો કરી રહી છે- જે સતત શીખતાં રહેવા પર જ ભાર મૂકે છે."
