"Sapne Zameen Par..."
Dreaming Together about new Education System
|
Why...
..Why do most of the children, when asked whether they would like to go to school, do not happily respond with an enthusiastic 'YES' and jump with joy?
...Why does a young student, after failing in board exam commit suicide? Why the school, in which he spent 10 years of his life, can't educate him to have courage to face realities of life?
...Why even after getting graduation degree in their hands, there are so many youths still aimlessly searching for direction in their lives? Why does 15 years of school/college education not equip them with understanding for mission of their lives?
...Why does a successful man, lie to his children who are eagerly waiting for him, when he reaches home late? Why does education not teach us to accept mistakes, be truthful and courageous?
... Why is it so, that even after Government has introduced number of Schemes for Primary and Girls' Education, there is 70% drop rate in schools?
Here's the Answer...
The reason lies in education system and Educator! The Parents and the Teachers, being the primary educators, play a very important role in Educating a child.
As long as there is dearth of teachers who (like Aamir Khan in movie Taare Zameen Par...) constantly fight against all odds to identify and nurture unique talent of each and every child with lots of love, understanding and patience, above questions will remain.
An environment where children can enjoy learning; which provides freedom to children to experiment different options/fields, which provides encouragement and instills confidence to take challenges in life is needed to impart real education.
A Ray of Hope
On one hand we have teachers who are strict and rude, who are interested only in completing their syllabus without bothering whether students have really understood what has been taught so far, who take teaching as an undisciplined hobby rather than a noble profession.
But on the other hand, we do have teachers who have dreams and sparkle in their eyes for better education system, who are responsible and enthusiastic, who have courage and willingness to lead a way towards more meaningful, life oriented education system.

'Sapne Zameen Par...'
It is 24th October, 9.15 am. A seminar, 'Sapne Zameen Par...' is about to begin in Ahmedabad City. Facing the dais are 40 teachers, youths and students of PTC colleges (to be teachers). Their faces are full of hope for tomorrow and their eyes gleaming with the dream to make a better future. Passion and determination to make efforts to change the present education system for better is felt by one and all.
On the dais is Sheeba Nair, Managing Trustee, Oasis. She is joined by Shri Govind Raval, Ex Vice Chancellor of Gujarat Vidyapith; Ms Anjou Musafir, Co-founder of Mahatma Gandhi International School, Shri Sukhdevbhai Patel, Founder & Managing Trustee of ‘Gantar’ and Ms Bhagyesh Soneji, CMD Elegant India on the next day.
Seminar begins with basic understanding of word, 'Education'. Learning 'a, b, c...' only makes us literate, but it is by inculcating right values do we really become educated. As the day progresses, a number of group discussions are held. Participants are coming up with unique and innovative ways to make Education System better. Panelists also share their vision, ideas and novel experiments that they had done in the field of education which gives lot of enthusiasm to Participants. To get sensitized, a movie show on 'Taare Zameen Par...' is also organized.
At the end of the day, the clarity surfaces, wherein they all realize that 1.) Child is always right. It is Parents and Teachers who need to understand where they are wrong and 2.) Parents and Teachers' Education is the most essential and inevitable step to go towards a betterment of present education system.
As the understanding of education becomes deeper, participants start giving shape to their dreams. To take a more concrete step towards making this dream come to reality, all are facilitated to form and share their vision for better education system. The seminar ends with the commitment to meet again on 23rd November 08 and continue this process to dream and share vision for better education system.
If you too are dissatisfied with the present education system and have the fire to make a difference, then join us in our endeavor. Let us take responsibility and be the part of solution.

Propagating Concept of ASHA in a Unique Way |
ASHA Team, (Bangalore) had put up a stall at fun fair organized by Vaishnav Samaj on 12th October with an objective to reach out to the masses of Bangalore. It gave a good opportunity to spread awareness of the cause to visitors at the fair.
Cleanliness is the main pillar of curriculum in ASHA; hence it was proposed to the organisers that Oasis will take up the responsibility of maintaining cleanliness of the grounds. From 12 noon to 7pm ASHA volunteers were supervising the work of the cleaners and persuading the stall owners to maintain hygiene. At many times volunteers did not hesitate to pick up the garbage themselves as there was a shortage of cleaners. The initiative to take up the responsibility of maintaining cleanliness and the work of the volunteers of Oasis was highly appreciated by the organizers and also the public. |
In order to draw the attention of the visitors to the cause of health-education, volunteers went round the fair and conducted on the spot health quiz. Individuals were asked to pick out a card and if they answered the question right they were given a prize coupon which they could redeem at the stall.
Charts with information of ASHA activities and Teaching Aids used in schools during Health Classes were displayed at the Oasis stall. Games were designed using health concepts to arouse the curiosity of children and at the same time make it enjoyable for them. A 3D model of a food pyramid was kept in which the children were required to arrange the different food items according to their food groups.

Innovative Experiments At Oasis Valleys |
GANGA MA CHAKRA
‘Gangama Chakra’ is one of the many experiments done at Oasis Valleys to develop sustainable living practices. As the name suggests, it was an experiment initiated by an old lady, Ganga Ma. This technique involves cultivating 10 mts (32 feet diameter) circular land in such a way that produce (in terms of fruits, vegetables and spices) is enough for daily green/fresh requirements of a family of four members throughout the year. In a country like ours, where hunger and poverty are highly widespread, this initiative with potential to sustain a family of four through small piece of land is need of the day.
Gangama Chakra is one of best example of ‘maximum production by giving minimum space, time, water and energy.’
Ganga Ma Chakra has been created at Oasis Valleys and presently, sowing for winter months has also been started.
Our Project site is 'OASIS VALLEYS', Mandva, Chanod, Gujarat. Ph: 02663 290409 |
WHEAT GRASS PROJECT
Wheat Grass Project was initiated in the year 2005. It was primarily started to promote the concept of healthy living and value addition in Farm Production. Wheat Grass is considered as “Green Blood” as the chemical composition of its main component - Chlorophyll, is very much similar to our blood protein - Hemoglobin. Wheat Grass Juice is very useful in purifying our blood. It is known to strengthen immunity. It is proven to fight against fatal diseases like cancer.
Today, Oasis Valleys has 20 Wheat Grass beds with the capacity to produce 10 Kg Wheat Grass per day.
Presently, fresh wheat grass is regularly supplied to customers in Baroda. To promote this concept to larger level and make it more convenient and user friendly, a project to convert it into dry powder which can be stored for long time is under progress.
