72 children - age ranging from 7 to 17 years - all over from Gujarat took part in the SummerHill Camp organized by Oasis at Oasis Valleys during 21st to 27th November, 2012. It turned out to be the most fascinating camp they ever had.

Children's Parliament : Fantastic System To Learn To Be Responsible
In The Environment Of Complete Freedom

The children's parliament is a unique feature of Oasis SummerHill Camps. Children elect their representatives like Members of Parliament and form a body called Jury. The jury is given the authority for taking any decision regarding the camp - starting from Menu for daily food, about special things they want to do in the camp to time they want to sleep at night. At Oasis we believe that given complete freedom and opportunity, children become more responsible and solve their problems by themselves. A Suggestion/Complain Box is put and children drop their problems, complains, suggestions in it during the day. All these are resolved in the night parliament session by the Jury. The night sessions become the most fascinating and the way children solve their problems amazes elders very much.

Crux of Reflections - what children felt about Children's Parliament:

પોતાની જાતને સમજવા માટે, સરખો ન્યાય આપવા માટે સારું માર્ગદર્શન મળી રહે છે

“આ અદાલત દ્વારા બાળકોની સમસ્યા સમજવી, તે લોકો સાથે મિત્રતા કરવી અને બધાની સામે પોતાની ભૂલ સ્વીકારી બીજીવાર એવું નહિ કરવાની પ્રતિજ્ઞા લેવી એ સહેલું નથી. પરંતુ આ અદાલત દ્વારા મને આ વસ્તુ ખૂબ જ સારી રીતે સમજવા મળી છે. આ અદાલતની સૌથી સારી વસ્તુ મને એ ગમી કે ઓએસિસના સંચાલક પણ જ્યૂરી મેમ્બર્સનું જ કહેલું માનતા હતા. જ્યૂરી મેમ્બર્સ અને બધા જ સદસ્યો આખી સંસદ જેવું કાર્ય કરતા હતા અને આખા કૅમ્પને હેન્ડલ કરતા હતા એ મને સૌથી વધારે ગમ્યું.”

The Children’s Parliament System was fantastic

“This is very different camp from other camps where children take their own decisions. I was not elected as a jury member but I learned to take decisions wisely, to be patient, not to be partial from jury’s debates and decisions. બાળકો જાતે પોતાનો પ્રૉબ્લેમ સોલ્વ કરવાનો પ્રયત્ન કરે છે

“ઓએસિસ સમરહિલ કૅમ્પમાં બાળકોની અદાલતની વ્યવસ્થા દ્વારા બાળકોમાં ન્યાયનો વિકાસ થાય છે. અને ખબર પડે છે કે અસલી ન્યાયાલયમાં શું અને કેવી રીતે થતું હશે. આના દ્વારા બાળકોમાં Self-Discipline પણ આવે છે અને બાળકોમાં દરેક વસ્તુ જાતે કરવાની ભાવના પ્રગટ થાય છે. આ સેશનમાં બાળકો પોતાના વિચારો વ્યક્ત કરીને જાતે પોતાનો પ્રૉબ્લેમ સોલ્વ કરવાનો પ્રયત્ન કરે છે.”

નાના બાળકો પર વિશ્વાસ રાખીને એમની પર મોટી જવાબદારી સોંપી

“આટલા નાના બાળકો પર વિશ્વાસ રાખીને એમની પર આટલી મોટી જવાબદારી સોંપવાનું કામ ગમે તેવાં માણસનું નથી. પરંતુ ઓએસિસનો પાર્લામેન્ટનો સેશન એવો હતો કે દરેક બાળકમાં પોતાની તર્કયુક્ત દલીલ કરવાનો confidence આવતો હતો. કોઈ સાચી અદાલતમાં જેટલાં જલદી નિર્ણયો ન લેવાતા હોય, એટલાં જલદી બાળકોની અદાલતમાં નિર્ણયો લેવાતા હતા. પોતાના જ મિત્રોને પોતે જ સજા આપીને પ્રતિનિધિઓએ જે કાર્ય કર્યું તે બહુ જ પ્રસંશાને પાત્ર છે.”

સજા ભોગવનારને અંદરથી લાગતું અને ભૂલને સુધારી શકતા

“અદાલતમાં આપણા ફ્રેન્ડ્સ કે ભાઈબહેન હોય એવું જોવામાં ન આવતું અને અદાલતમાં ખૂબ સચ્ચાઈથી સજા પણ આપી. એ સજા જે આપી તેનાથી સજા ભોગવનારને અંદરથી લાગતું અને ભૂલને સુધારી શકતા હતા.”

અદાલતની વ્યવસ્થાથી કૅમ્પ ખૂબ જ શિસ્તબદ્ધ ચાલ્યો

“બાળકોની અદાલતની વ્યવસ્થાથી કૅમ્પ ખૂબ જ શિસ્તબદ્ધ ચાલ્યો. હું તો એમ કહું છું કે દરેક સ્કૂલે પણ આવી વ્યવસ્થા કરવી જોઈએ.”

હિંમત હાર્યા વગર સચ્ચાઈનો સામનો કરી લડવું તે શીખવા મળે છે

Freedom to children is a core value of SummerHill Camp. And in the atmosphere where children feel complete freedom, they become more responsible and self-disciplined. They give their opinions freely, work together happily, do their duties without inspection and help each other solve personal problems.

Crux of Reflections - what children liked the most in the camp:

બધાએ બહારનું વાંચન કરવું જ જોઈએ

“આ સમગ્ર કૅમ્પમાં બધા સેશનમાં ખૂબ જ મજા આવી પણ મારો પ્રિય સેશન મહાદેવસરનો ‘પુસ્તકો મને કઈ રીતે બદલી શકે?’ હતો. આ સેશનમાં જાણવા મળ્યું કે વિદ્યાર્થીના જીવનમાં એકલા તેના ભણવાના પુસ્તકોનું જ મહત્વ નથી. બધાએ બહારનું વાંચન કરવું જ જોઈએ જેથી કેટલી બધી નવી જાણકારી મળે છે. અને દરેકે પોતાના ઘરમાં એક લાઇબ્રેરી રાખવી જ્યાં આપણે પુસ્તકોનો સંગ્રહ કરી શકીએ. જેટલું બને તેટલું વધુ ને વધુ બહારનું જ્ઞાન મેળવવું જોઈએ જેથી Lifeની Examમાં ક્યારેય Fail નહીં થઈએ.”

પુસ્તકને વાંચીને સારા ગુણ લઈ તેનો જીવનમાં અમલ કરવો જોઈએ

“મારો સૌથી પ્રિય સેશન ‘પુસ્તકો મને કેવી રીતે બદલી શકે’ તે હતો. પુસ્તકો વાંચીએ તો ખાલી દેખાવ ખાતર નહિ વાંચતા તેમાંથી સારા ગુણ લઈને અને તેમને જીવનમાં ઉતારીને અમલ કરવો જોઈએ. તે મારા માટે ખૂબ જ મહત્વનું છે કારણ કે આજ સુધી મેં ઘણાંય પુસ્તકો વાંચ્યા પરંતુ તેમાં ખૂબ જ ઓછું ધ્યાન આપીને વાંચતો હતો. હવે હું વાંચવામાં પણ ધ્યાન રાખીશ.”

“My favourite session from the whole camp was Leadership Development, because I learnt so many qualities that the real leader should have. મેં મિડનાઇટ ટ્રૅકિંગ કર્યું તેનાથી હું ખૂબ ખુશ છું

“આ સમરહિલ કૅમ્પમાં મેં મિડનાઇટ ટ્રૅકિંગ કર્યું તેનાથી હું ખૂબ ખુશ છું. પહેલાં હું ભૂતથી બહુ બીતો હતો પણ મેં મારા મગજમાં બેસાડ્યું કે જો આપણે એકવાર ભૂતની સાચી હકીકત જાણીએ ત્યારે જ આપણને ખબર પડે. હવે હું એક વખત ત્યાં (સ્મશાનમાં) જઈ આવ્યો એટલે હું હવે ભૂતથી બીતો નથી. અને ભૂતથી ન બીવાને કારણે હું ખૂબ જ ખુશ છું.”

અલગ-અલગ રીતે Drawing શિખવાડતા હતા

“Landscape Painting એ મારો સૌથી પ્રિય અને સૌથી વધારે યાદગાર સેશન હતો કારણ કે મારે મોટા થઈને આર્ટિસ્ટ બનવું છે અને તેમાં અલગ-અલગ રીતે Drawing શિખવાડતા હતા તેથી મને આ સેશનમાં ખૂબ મજા આવી.”

આજના યુગમાં છોકરીઓએ સેલ્ફ ડિફેન્સ શીખવું જરૂરી છે

“સમગ્ર કૅમ્પમાંથી મારો સૌથી પ્રિય સેશન જ્વલંતસરનો સેલ્ફ ડિફેન્સ હતો કેમ કે આજના યુગમાં છોકરીઓએ સેલ્ફ ડિફેન્સ શીખવું જરૂરી છે અને મેં આ જ વિચારો ધ્યાનમાં રાખી આ સેશન્સ એટેન્ડ કર્યા અને મને નવું શીખવા અને જાણવા મળ્યું.”

પૃથ્વી આપણી એકલાંની નથી પણ સૌની છે

“મારો પ્રિય વિષય પર્યાવરણ હતો કારણ કે તેમાં શીખવાનું મળે છે કે વૃક્ષો આપણને જિંદગીમાં ખૂબ જ ઉપયોગી હોય છે અને આ પૃથ્વી પર એકલાં માનવ જ નહિ પણ પ્રાણી-પક્ષી, જીવ-જંતુઓ વગેરે પણ રહે છે. પૃથ્વી આપણી એકલાંની નથી પણ સૌની છે. એટલે બધા ધરતીને ધરતી માતા કહે છે.”

મેં જે કામ ઘરે ન કર્યું હોય અને મને આવડતું પણ ન હોય તે હું અહીં આવીને શીખી છું

“આ કૅમ્પમાં મને જે ડ્યુટી નિભાવવાની હતી તે સેશન ખૂબ ગમ્યો કારણ કે મેં જે કામ ઘરે ન કર્યું હોય અને મને આવડતું પણ ન હોય તે હું અહીં આવીને શીખી છું.”

એક સોફ્ટ ટોય માટે ઘણી બધી મહેનત જોઈએ તે મને આ કૅમ્પમાં ખબર પડી

“મારો સૌથી પ્રિય સેશન સોફ્ટ ટોય્સનો હતો કારણ કે જે પોચાં-પોચાં રમકડા - ઢીંગલાઓ અને પ્રાણીઓ અમે અમારાં હાથથી બનાવ્યા અને મને તો ખૂબ જ મજા પડી. મને પહેલાં સીવતા આવડતું હતું પણ સીવણકામની આટલી બધી રીતો હોય તે ખબર નહોતી તેથી મેં અહીં ઘણી બધી રીતો શીખીને સસલું બનાવ્યું, તો મને એટલો બધો આનંદ થયો કે હું તે શબ્દોમાં વ્યક્ત નથી કરી શકતી. એક સોફ્ટ ટોય માટે ઘણી બધી મહેનત જોઈએ તે મને આ કૅમ્પમાં ખબર પડી. આની માટે હું પ્રક્ષાદીદીનો આભાર માનું છું. Community living is also one of the chief objectives of SummerHill Camp. Children from different area and backgrounds come to the camp and stay like a big family. Without cast, creed, gender or religious bias they become friends. The bond of friendship becomes so strong that with wet eyes, they almost refuse to depart on the last day.

અહીં જે ફ્રૅન્ડ મળ્યા છે તેવાં ફ્રૅન્ડ મને બીજે ભાગ્યે જ મળતા

“અહીંથી પાછા ગયા પછી હું સૌથી વધુ ફ્રૅન્ડસને મિસ કરીશ કારણ કે મને અહીં જે ફ્રૅન્ડ મળ્યા છે તેવાં ફ્રૅન્ડ મને બીજે ભાગ્યે જ મળતા. અહીંના ફ્રૅન્ડ એટલાં બધા હેલ્પફૂલ હતા કે કઈ રીતે એમનો આભાર માનું તે જ સમજ નથી પડતી.”

સૌથી વધુ અહીંયાંના શિક્ષકોને ખૂબ miss કરીશ

“અહીંથી પાછા ગયા પછી હું સૌથી વધુ અહીંયાંના શિક્ષકોને ખૂબ miss કરીશ કારણ કે આ બધા શિક્ષકોએ અમને ઘણું બધું નવું શિખવાડયું છે જે અમને સ્કૂલમાં પણ જાણવા નહોતું મળ્યું. અહીંયાંના શિક્ષકોને અમારા પ્રત્યે અને અમને તેમના પ્રત્યે ખૂબ લાગણી થઈ ગઈ છે.”

અમે બધા એક પરિવારની જેમ હતા

“અમે આટલાં દિવસ સાથે રહ્યા તેથી અમે બધા એક પરિવારની જેમ હતા અને જ્યારે પરિવારના સદસ્યો દૂર હોય ત્યારે આપણે તેમને મિસ કરીએ છીએ.”

હું આવા friendsને કદી નહિ ભૂલું

“અહીંથી પાછા ગયા પછી હું સૌથી વધુ મારા Friends અને અહીંના ફેકલ્ટીના સભ્યોને યાદ કરીશ. કારણ કે અહીંના ફેકલ્ટીના સભ્યો એટલાં સરળ સ્વભાવના છે, બધા લોકોથી જુદા તરી આવે છે અને દરેક બાળકને મદદ કરે છે. અહીંના જુદાજુદા શહેરમાંથી આવતા Friendsની ભાષા અલગ, રીતભાત અલગ પણ દરેક friend બીજા સાથે મળી જવાની ખૂબ કોશિશ કરે છે. તેથી હું આવા friendsને કદી નહિ ભૂલું.”

Reflected by one of the teachers -

“After my parents, children here gave me unlimited love”

As many as 30-40 subjects taught during SummerHill camps. 20-25 faculties/teachers from all over Gujarat and outside come to teach children various subjects which are usually not taught at their schools. Normally it turns out that more than teaching to children, teachers learn from them. In fact, the love these teachers receive from children is something so powerful that they wish to come to camps again and again.

આ મારો first camp હતો કે જેમાં નાના બાળકો પાસેથી ઘણું શીખી

“First of all, આ સમરકૅમ્પમાં હું એક Teacher તરીકે આવી હતી, તો મારે તો અહીં બધાને શીખવવાનું હોય. પણ ના, આ મારો first camp હતો કે જેમાં હું મારાથી એકદમ એટલે એકદમ નાના બાળકો પાસેથી ઘણું શીખી.

આ બાળકો પોતાના વિચારો જેમ બધાની સામે રજૂ કરે કે આપણને એવું થાય કે મેં આવું તો કશું વિચાર્યું પણ ન હતું અને આ લોકો આટલાં નાના થઈને આટલું સરસ રીતે વિચારી શકે અને તેને analyze કરે અને પછી પોતાના વિચારોને અમલમાં મૂકે છે. પોતાના નિર્ણયો હંમેશા આપણે જાતે જ સારી રીતે વિચારીને લેવા જોઈએ, આ એક વિચારથી બહુ ખુશ થઈ.

I LOVE THIS CAMP. અહીંથી પાછાં ગયા પછી હું આ બધા નાના બાળકો અને મારા માટે જે Respected persons છે તેમનો પ્યાર મિસ કરીશ. મારી lifeમાં મારા parents પછી તમે છો જેમણે મને આટલો બધો means unlimited પ્યાર આપ્યો.”

જે રીતે એમણે અદાલત ચલાવી છે તે ખરેખર પ્રસંશાને લાયક છે

“સમરહિલ કૅમ્પમાં ઘણાં નવા બાળકો હતા છતાં પણ જે રીતે એમણે અદાલત ચલાવી છે તે ખરેખર પ્રસંશાને લાયક છે. ઘણા ઇમોશનલ કેસો હતા પણ એમણે જે રીતે હેન્ડલ કર્યા તે જાણીને થાય છે કે કદાચ હું પણ આ નિર્ણય ના લઈ શકું. સૌને પોતાની વાત કહ્યાની આઝાદી મળી તો એમણે એનો ઉપયોગ સરસ રીતે કર્યો.

આ કૅમ્પમાં ઘણા બધા મિત્રો બન્યા. ઘણા બધા સાથે એવો પરિચય થયો કે જે ઘણા નજીક આવી ગયા. હું ઓએસિસનો જેટલો પણ આભાર માનું એટલો ઓછો છે. મને જે પ્લેટફોર્મ આપ્યું છે એ કદાચ અત્યાર સુધી મને કોઈએ પણ નથી આપ્યું, જેનાથી હું આનંદથી કામ કરતી થઈ. ખરો આનંદ શું છે એવું અહીં આવીને અનુભવ્યું છે.”
